Healthy dogWe all have seen dogs that make us smile when we watch them. They have bright shiny eyes, a shiny coat, a great appetite, playful and interested in the environment, and full of zest … they are just fun to be around and watch! Kind of what we would call “the perfect dog.” These are all indicators that your best buddy is strong and healthy.

When you begin noticing changes in your dog’s attitude or lack of interest in things he used to love, his eyes are not as sparkly as usual, his appetite is weak, he has trouble maintaining his ideal weight, his coat is lack luster, and just does not seem to be having fun and enjoying life, it may be time for a visit to your vet. These changes in your pet may be an indicator of an underlying problem or condition.

Keep a watchful eye because you know your dog better than anyone, and if you notice changes check with your vet to be sure everything is o.k.

Springtime is a great time to get your dog out for fresh air and exercise, but there are many hazardous items that may linger in your yard. Here is a list of things to look out for in your yard: sharp fencing from wind damage; trash that has blown into your yard that your dog may chew on or eat; antifreeze or empty containers that once had poisonous substances inside; and broken fence slats that allow your pet to escape or get stuck under.

Begin well in advance of your trip to help ensure that your pet is happy and well-cared for while you are vacationing. Here are some helpful tips: Find a pet sitter that is bonded and insured; interview the pet sitter in your home before you hire her/him so that you can observe how the interaction with your pet goes; familiarize the pet sitter with your home and the special needs of your pet well before you leave to make sure that medications are administered properly, emergency numbers are accessible, and routines are practiced.

Preparing for birth

Mom and pupsWhen a human finds out she is expecting a baby, she begins much planning and preparation to ensure that her baby has the best chance for a healthy delivery. The same is true when your female dog is expecting babies. Begin your planning by selecting a vet that will be on call for the birth. If a puppy gets stuck, or the mom’s temperature suddenly drops or rises, or she is pushing and nothing is happening it is time to get your vet involved. A c-section may be necessary, or another form of intervention that could save the life of the puppy or the mom.

The birth of new life is a joyful time, but also it is a time of some stress and change. Help your new mom out by keeping the vet involved, and providing the comfort and care she and her new pups need.
