Winter weather and pets

Winter weather can be dangerous for our pets. Just remember, our pets need what we need in winter. Protection from harsh wind and wet snow, a dry place to sleep (preferably indoors), and caution to avoid frostbite on their delicate ear tips and mucous membranes.
Animals need a little more food in the winter to stay warm, and always check water bowls to be certain that they have access to clean unfrozen water.
Salt and chemicals we use for icy walkways and driveways are harsh and can irritate your pet’s paws. Wiping their paws with a clean moist cloth when they come indoors should be enough to keep them clean.
Indoor pets are easily irritated by smoke from wood fireplaces and should have a place to get clear fresh air. Dry skin is often a problem, causing itching and scratching. Frequent combing or brushing of your pet’s fur and a high quality pet food will help.
Older pets need to be pampered a little more, and please have patience with them when they use the stairs or are outside for a walk. They may be a little stiffer and slower than usual.
