Pets are often the target of abuse in homes where abuse is present between spouses, children as victims, or generally where fighting, arguing or shouting is present. Pets are easy targets because they are silent victims of abuse thus making them an easy target for an abuser who preys on the vulnerable. In a violent home, 88% of families who abuse their children also abuse their pets.
As Renae Hamrick states,”Pets are also injured or killed as punishment to a child or spouse for something that angered the abuser. Threats of animal abuse are made to keep the family silent about what goes on inside the home.”
