Skunk odor is very offensive to the human nose. Your best bet for getting the odor off your dog is to tackle the job before the spray dries. Skunk spray is a yellow-colored oil that a skunk sprays (up to 20 feet) when a skunk feels threatened. Here is a solution that works really well:
Mix in large bowl or open container one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap (Dawn works great), and1/4 cup of baking soda. The mixture is most effectve when it begins to foam. Wet down your dog and apply the mixture to the sprayed area. Don’t lather up your entire dog because you may spread the skunk oil all over. Leave the mixture on your dog for about 10 minutes and rinse with tap water.
If your dog was sprayed in the face, carefully apply the mixture with a washcloth to the face; don’t get it in his eyes, nose, or mouth. If your dog’s eyes are red, he probably got the oil from the skunk in his eyes. A saline solution applied to his eyes should flush out the oil.
Good luck! Remember to wear old clothes that may have to be thrown out when you are done.
