Scratching is a natural behavior for cats. It is how they mark their territory.
The key for you as a cat owner, is to get her to scratch at a scratching post, not you or your furniture. Get a good scratching post and put it in the center of where you and your family spend most of your time. Moving it to the outer limits of the room must be gradual. When you have a good central spot, entice the kitty to be around the post; play with her there, pet her there, rub catnip on the post, have her chase a string or her favorite toy around the post.
This will get her used to the scratching post, and she will claim it as part of her territory. Eventually, she will learn that when she want to scratch, she has a coolk post to mark up.
Cats do not like the scent of citrus. If you put a little citrus scent on your furniture, this should be enough to repel your kitty.
