According to Richard Webster in a 12/06 issue of the New Orleans City Business, a civil suit has been filed on behalf of at least 15 pet owners by a New Orleans attorney, alleging that that St. Bernard Parish sheriff deputies killed their pets. The attorney general is also pursuing a criminal investigation.
After the storm, dozens of pets were placed in three St. Bernard schools used as shelters. Soon, stories began circulating that these beloved pets were being slaughtered by none other than deputy sheriffs. Mark Steinway, of Pasado’s Safe Haven an animal welfare refuge in Washington state, went to investigate. According to Steinway, the site was horrific. “It was a massacre,†said Mark Steinway, co-founder of Pasado’s Safe Haven, an animal welfare refuge in Sultan, Wash. “Dogs were shot in the hindquarters, shot in the gut, shot in the feet, in the mouth. It was very, very gruesome.â€
